My Favorite Musical Song ~No.12 Gethsemane ( I Want To Say)

No.12 Gethsemane ( I Only Want To Say)

Lyrics by Tim Rice,

composition by Andrew Lloyd Webber

“Jesus Christ Superstar” 1970

Feelings for the song

This is a typical rock musical

And the second collaboration with Tim Rice,

which began in 1968 with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The story is familiar with the movie version in which Glen Carter plays Jesus

This Gethsemane is excellent from the song by Kiyotaka Imai,

which I have introduced before.

Mr. Imai sings in English,

so I can sing the English version more easily,

Tokiko Iwatani’s translations are also resonate.

A scene of confessing anguish to his father in the Garden of Gethsemane

On the last day after the Last Supper and quietly greeted,

the phrase that begins whispering gradually changes to an expression

that gradually adds emotion and trembles violently.

It’s a long song,

so it’s a hard song to satisfy the audience.

To do that,

being “human” and expose your fear of death

and your obsession with life is very important.

Lyrics

I only want to say,

If there is a way,

Take this cup away from me

For I don’t want to taste its poison.

Feel it burn me,

I have changed.

I’m not as sure, as when we started.

Then, I was inspired.

Now, I’m sad and tired.

Listen, surely I’ve exceeded expectations,

Tried for three years, seems like thirty.

Could you ask as much from any other man?

But if I die,

See the saga through and do the things you ask of me,

Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree.

I’d want to know, I’d want to know, My God,

I’d want to know, I’d want to know, My God,

Want to see, I’d want to see, My God,

Want to see, I’d want to see, My God,

Why I should die.

Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?

Would the things I’ve said and done matter any more?

I’d have to know, I’d have to know, my Lord,

Have to know, I’d have to know, my Lord,

Have to see, I’d have to see, my Lord,

Have to see, I’d have to see, my Lord,

If I die what will be my reward?

If I die what will be my reward?

Have to know, I’d have to know, my Lord,

I’d have to know, I’d have to know, my Lord,

Why should I die? Oh why should I die?

Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?

Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain.

Show me there’s a reason for your wanting me to die.

You’re far to keen and where and how, but not so hot on why.

Alright, I’ll die!

Just watch me die!

See how I die!

Then I was inspired.

Now, I’m sad and tired.

After all, I’ve tried for three years, seems like ninety.

Why then am I scared to finish what I started,

What you started – I didn’t start it.

God, thy will is hard,

But you hold every card.

I will drink your cup of poison.

Nail me to your cross and break me,

Bleed me, beat me,

Kill me.

Take me, now!

Before I change my mind.

My Favorite Musical Song ~No.11 On My Own

No.11 On My Own

Lyrics Herbert Kretzmer (English version) & Alain Boublil (French version)

Composer Claude Michel Schönberg

“Les Miserables” 1985

Feelings for the song

Needless to say, the original novel of the same name by Victor Hugo

Continued the longest long run in the musical stage history,

By performing in cities around the world

Probably the best 3 on the musical stage.

Even in the lesson,

the members always choose at least one song as the assignment song,

So at the class recital,

Sometimes we all sing by ensemble a few times.

Many casts can make it powerful.

This is an Eponine’s song,

I wanted to sing it

while listening to Michael Crawford’s album introduced in No.3 “Maria”

Re Miserable’s song’s lyrics are mostly genderless

Because these can be accepted by either gender.

Even if you change Him to Her

You do not make us feel unnatural.

Lyrics

On my own
Pretending he’s beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it’s only in my mind
That I’m talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there’s a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river’s just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees…

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river’s just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I’m learning
All my life
I’ve only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that’s full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own

My Favorite Musical Song ~ No.10 “Out There”

No.10 “Out There”

Written by Stephen Schwartz

Translated by Keita Asari

Composer Alan Menken

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” 1996

Feelings for the song

To the French version introduced in No.5 Notre-Dame de Paris,

This is Disney-produced musical.

The original is the same Victor Hugo novel “Notre-Dame de Paris”

The story goes on refreshingly like Disney,

The heavy theme of the original cannot be ignored,

It might have been a little unfamiliar to the kids

who are Disney’s main target.

In the Japanese version of the DVD / CD, by members of Shiki Theater,

which will entertain you with its wonderful talent.

Quasimodo Kanji Ishimaru

Esmeralda Chizu Hosaka

Floro Takeshi Kusaka Song: Toshihide Mura

Kuropan Akihiko Mitsueda

Phoebus Eiji Akutagawa (currently Soma Suzuki)

Victor Kiyotaka Imai

They are singing expressive.

It is one of my favorite Disney animation.

Singing two roles from Floro (Toshihide Mura) to Quasimodo (Kanji Ishimaru)

The range is wide from Mr. Mura’s baritone to Mr. Ishimaru’s tenor,

but it is not as tight as I expected.

It is difficult to express the contrast between Floro’s coldness

and Quasimodo’s pure heart by myself.

But at the last part of Quasimodo

I can be released and refreshed.

I would try to let audience feel good

to see that I enjoy singing freely.

I want to listen to the new “Out There” version of the Shiki Theater.

Lyrics

Frollo:
The world is cruel
The world is wicked
It’s I alone whom you can trust in this whole city
I am your only friend
I who keep you, teach you, feed you, dress you
I who look upon you without fear
How can I protect you, boy, unless you
Always stay in here
Away in here
Remember what I taught you, Quasimodo
You are deformed
Quasimodo:
I am deformed
Frollo:
And you are ugly
Quasimodo:
And I am ugly
Frollo:
And these are crimes
For which the world
Shows little pity
You do not comprehend
Quasimodo:
You are my one defender
Frollo:
Out there they’ll revile you
As a monster
Quasimodo:
I am a monster
Frollo:
Out there they will hate
And scorn and jeer
Quasimodo:
Only a monster
Frollo:
Why invite their calumny
And consternation?
Stay in here
Be faithful to me
Quasimodo:
I’m faithful
Frollo:
Grateful to me
Quasimodo:
I’m grateful
Frollo:
Do as I say
Obey
And stay
In here
Quasimodo:
I’ll stay
In here
Quasimodo:
Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone
Gazing at the people down below me
All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not above them
But part of them
And out there
Living in the sun
Give me one day out there
All I ask is one
To hold forever
Out there
Where they all live unaware
What I’d give
What I’d dare
Just to live one day out there
Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
Through the roofs and gables I can see them
Ev’ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I was in their skin
I’d treasure ev’ry instant
Out there
Strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there
Like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I’ll be content
With my share
Won’t resent
Won’t despair
Old and bent
I won’t care
I’ll have spent
One day
Out there

My favorite Musical song ~No.9. Love Changes Everything

No.9 Love changes Everything

Lyrics Don Black & Charles Hart

Composition Andrew Lloyd Webber

 “Aspects of Love” 1989

Feelings for the song

The original is David Garnett’s novel of the same name

The title seems to be a perfect antithesis against the domestic supreme principle that has been spreading in recent years

However, the lyrics does not mean that.

The youth’s hot and wet sad feelings are revealed.

The reason I got to know this song was

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music Video found in NY.

A scene where Michael Ball recalls and sings at George’s villa.

I haven’t seen the stage, but you can see the whole story on the CD.

In the Shiki Theater in Japan,

Main casts are Mr. Kanji Ishimaru as Alex, Ms. Chizu Hosaka as Rose, and Mr. Akihiko Mitsueda as George.

Among the works of Shiki Theater, which deals with the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber,

feels closest to the original.

That may be because Ms. Hosaka and Mr. Mitsueda have great acting ability.

And the Japanese translation by Mr. Keita Asari is better for singing in Japanese, and

a little cool and suits me.

The lyrics may suit for Japanese people.

Also it suits Mr. Ishimaru’s character

The monotonous code continues.

I take care of not putting pressure on my throat or chest.

Be aware of power at the waist.

The challenge is the last word,

“Same” in English, “Itsuka, that means someday” in Japanese.

Especially, it is quite hard to raise the sound with Japanese vowels “a”.

The last part requires a sense of pureness that continues to grow forever.

Lyrics

Love,

 Love changes everything:

 Hands and faces,

 Earth and sky,

 Love,

 Love changes everything:

 How you live and

 How you die

 Love

 Can make the summer fly,

 Or a night

 Seem like a lifetime.

 Yes, Love,

 Love changes everything:

 Now I tremble

 At your name.

 Nothing in the

 World will ever

 Be the same.

 Love,

 Love changes everything:

 Days are longer,

 Words mean more.

 Love,

 Love changes everything:

 Pain is deeper

 Than before.

 Love

 Will turn your world around,

 And that world

 Will last for ever.

 Yes, Love,

 Love changes everything,

 Brings you glory,

 Brings you shame.

 Nothing in the

 World will ever

 Be the same.

My favorite Musical song ~No.8 The Music of the Night

No.8 The Music of the Night

Lyrics Charles Hart,

Composition Andrew Lloyd Webber

“The Phantom of the Opera Phantom of the Opera” 1986

Feelings for the song

The original is the novel of the same name

by Gaston Leroux (1910) in France.

watched it 6 times at Broadway and Shiki Theater Company.

Broadway phantom at Broadway is

always full of wild taste and devilish.

It can’t come true anymore, but

I want to see the original cast,

Michael Crawford

Sarah Brightman

at the west end

When singing this song,

What comes to mind is the scene that

Phantom appears in an underground maze.

His mind looks cold as ice

Still, the bewitching heat is transmitted.

The tears comes out all the time by touching his mind.

This character is inherited

on “Love Never Dies”

It has become the eternal theme of the phantom,

My Favorite Musical Song ~No.7 Wheels Of A Dream

No.7 Wheels Of A Dream

Lyrics  Lynn Ahrens

Composer  Stephen Flaherty

 “Ragtime ” 1998

Feelings for the song

The original is a novel of the same name by E. L. Doctorow (1975)

From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century

WASP, black, Jewish 3 families’s story of life.

The Lion King won the Tony Awards on the competition.

The stage performance does not last long,

because there are many performers.

So I want to see at least once someday.

And this song is sung by Black family

Coalhouse and Sarah

singing while holding a baby.

I sang this only in the singing part of Coalhouse.

The original cast Brian Stokes Mitchell

Has an unique, low and thick singing voice,

Which we can understand immediately after hearing.

When I think about it now, t

he song selection may have been reckless.

Guessing the lyrics,

We can feel Coalhouse’s love for America, Sarah, and his son.

This one song gives us the theme of the musical.

I got a sheet music at bookstores around Broadway.

I’m glad to sing this song, which is not so popular in Japan.

Lyrics

I see his face.

I hear his heartbeat.

I look in those eyes.

How wise they seem.

Well, when he is old enough

I will show him America

And he will ride

on the wheels of a dream.

We’ll go down South

And see your people

Won’t they take to him

Like cats to cream!

Then we’ll travel on from there.

And we will ride

On the wheels of a dream.

Yes, the wheels are turning for us, girl.

And the times are starting to roll.

Any man can get where he wants to

If he’s got some fire in his soul.

We’ll see justice, Sarah,

And plenty of men

Who will stand up

And give us our due.

Oh, Sarah, it’s more that promises.

Sarah, it must be true.

A country that let’s a man like me

Own a car, raise a child, build a life with you…

With you…

Beyond that road,

Beyond this lifetime

That car full of hope

Will always gleam!

With the promise of happiness

And the freedom he’ll live to know.

He’ll travle with head held high,

Just as far as his heart can go

And he will ride-

Our son will ride-

On the wheels of a dream.

My favorite Musical songs ~No.6 I Am What I Am

No.6 I Am What I Am

Lyrics / Composer: Jerry Herman

“La Cage aux Folles” 1983

Feelings for the song

The original is Jean Poiret’s stage play “Mr. Lady Mr. Madam”,

which received the Tony Award in 1984.

Like my favorite Gay’s movie “Torch Song Trilogy”

It ’s painful, but it ’s heartwarming.

On the other hand, this “La Cage au Fall” is

a play style that makes you laugh all the time.

Probably this is the reason for receiving it in Japan

As proof of that, as the role of Zaza

Known as Masachika Ichimura in Japan,

Before him it was Masaomi Kondo

Who is famous actor, not singer.

So it looks like a comedy, not a musical.

Beside that,

I got to know this song in

“Best Musical -4 Knights”

Kojiro Oka sings in a sexy way.

This poem is better than the musical version.

For those who are listening

The possibilities of being pleased expand.

In order to express feelings,

Subtle changes in tempo.

The piano teacher always plays together perfectly.

Thanks her again

Lyrics

I am what I am

I don’t want praise I don’t want pity

I bang my own drum

Some think it’s noise I think it’s pretty

And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle

Why not see things from a different angle

Your life is a shame

Till you can shout out loud

‘I am what I am’

I am what I am

And what I am needs no excuses

I deal my own deck

Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces

It’s one life and there’s no return and no deposit

One life so it’s time to open up your closet

Life’s not worth a dam till you can say

‘Hey, world, I am what I am’

My Favorite Musical Song ~No.5 Le temps des cathédrales

No.5 “Le temps des cathédrales “

Lyrics: Luc Pramondon

Composition: Riccardo Cochante

 “Notre-Dame de Paris” 1997

Feelings for the song

This is the French musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel “Notre-Dame de Paris”.

Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is the same as the original.

The French musical has a much more original love triangle,

drawn with a muddy touch.

While remembering the movement of Quasimodo’s body by the composition of the song

Eventually, I was dragged into a dark and deep pool and couldn’t escape.

This song is a prologue of the story sung by the bard Grangoire at the beginning.

The impact of the original cast Bruno Pelletier is strong.

The reason I got to know this song was

Kiyotaka Imai’s album GLORIOUS VOICE.

Mr. Imai’s voice is far from the typical Japanese voice, so admirable.

In the album it’s in English,

I used the lyrics.
