No.68「We Are the Champions」伝説のチャンピオン

曲への思い
誰もが知るQueenの「We Are tha Champions」、
ここでは日本でも2005年から2007年にかけて
ロンドン盤オリジナルキャストによって公演されたミュージカル
『We Will Rock You』のクライマックスの歌として選びました。

当時、どこか古びた印象の新宿コマ劇場（現在は、ゴジラが立つ新宿東宝ビル）が、
Queenのミュージカル一色に染めて、
そのイメージを一新させるイベントでした。
ミュージカルクラスメートとともにマチネを楽しんだ後、
なぜか男二人で近くの化粧品売り場に行って、
はしゃいていたのが思い出されます。

また今回この曲を選んだのは、
フレディ・マーキュリーが他界して35年、
生きていれば80歳。
もし彼が生きていて、今この曲を歌ったら、
伝わってくるものは想像を絶するものがあるんだろうなって思って、
思い切ってこぶしを振り上げた・・って感じです。

スポーツの場で扱われることが多い曲ですが、
スポーツに限らず毎日を懸命に生きているすべての者に
フレディが称賛し、励ましている詞であることを、
意識して取り組んでみました。

この曲、一部に早口の英語が盛り込まれていることと、
そもそもフレディのキーが高すぎて
「ハードル高すぎ・・」と思ったのですが、
４つキーを下げてようやく歌える音階まで持ってこれた
という状況でレッスン開始しました。
なかなか歌詞とメロディーとのリズミカルな抑揚がつかめないまま、
中盤まで進行。
いつものパターンではあるのですが、
ようやく最終コーナーに入ってから、
ちからの入れ具合もわかってきて、
ピアノの伴奏もしっかり息が合って、
本番では少しはさまになったかな・・
っていうレベルに持っていけました。
転調によって出しにくかったであろうバックコーラスも
ミニコンサートの日にはしっかりと出してもらい、
感謝でした。
